Police treatment-Dutt is also well known for having drug problems, in the early stages of his career, for which he underwent treatment on his father's insistence at a drug rehab centre in Texas, USA. He was released in July of that year after only 5 months in prison and ordered to serve the rest of his sentence on police bail. He was granted permission to leave India whilst on bail, in order to receive treatment in Texas.

He returned to India after four years, once again on his father's insistence and established himself as one of the prominent young faces of Hindi cinema. 2009 saw Dutt enter politics and although he was not allowed to contest elections due to the charges of TADA against him (see illegal possession of arms), he was instead appointed General Secretary of the Samajwadi party. In December 2010 he left his post due to the many controversies he became embroiled in, He left the post stating Politics isn't for him, as he thinks from his heart as well as being too outspoken for such a role.

One of these remarks saw him, during a speech on live TV, offering Mayawati, a leader of an opposing party, a jaadu ki jhappi and pappi (a magical hug and kiss, a now infamous dialogue from his Munnabhai Mbbs movie) as he felt she was in need of it.

Film

Rahman accidentally played a tune on piano during his father's recording for a film, which R. K. Shekhar later developed into a complete song, "Vellithen Kinnam Pol", for the Malayalam film Penpada. This track credited to his father, was sung by Jayachandran and penned by Bharanikkavu Sivakumar. film career began in 1992, when he started Panchathan Record Inn, a music recording and mixing studio attached to the backyard of his house.

Over time it would become the most advanced recording studio in India, and arguably one of Asia’s most sophisticated and high-tech studios. He initially composed scores for documentaries, jingles for advertisements and Indian Television channels and other projects. In 1987 Rahman, then still known as Dileep got his first opportunity to compose jingles for new range of watches being launched by Allwyn.

At an advertising awards function, Rahman met one of India's most famous directors, Mani Ratnam. Rahman played him a few of his music samples. Mani loved them so much that he asked Rahman to compose the music for his next film, Roja (1992).

The debut led Rahman to receive the Rajat Kamal (Silver Lotus) award for Best Music Director at the National Film Awards, an unprecedented win for a first-time film composer. Rahman has since been awarded the Silver Lotus three more times for Minsara Kanavu (Electric Dreams, Tamil) in 1997, Lagaan (Tax, Hindi) in 2002, Kannathil Muthamittal (A Peck on the Cheek, Tamil) in 2003, the most ever by any composer.

Roja's score met with high sales and acclaim in both its original and dubbed versions, led by the theme song "Chinna Chinna Aasai" bringing about a marked change in film music at the time. Rahman followed this with successful scores for Tamil–language films of the Chennai film industry including Ratnam's politically charged Bombay, the urbanite Kadhalan, Thiruda Thiruda and S. Shankar's debut film Gentleman, spurred by the popular dance song "Chikku Bukku Rayile".

The soundtrack of Bombay sold 12 million copies worldwide. Rangeela, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, marked Rahman's debut for Hindi-language films made in the Mumbai film industry.Many successful scores for films including Dil Se and the percussive Taal followed.Sufi mysticism would inspire the track "Chaiyya Chaiyya" from the former, as well as the composition "Zikr" from his score for the film Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero for which he created large symphonic orchestral and choral arrangements.

He has consistently produced commercially successful soundtracks when collaborating with particular film directors such as Mani Ratnam who he has worked with since Roja, and the director S. Its first release was his score to the film Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. Vande Mataram, an album of his original compositions released on India's 50th anniversary of independence in 1997, enjoyed great commercial success. Vande Mataram is the largest selling Indian non-film album to date. He followed it up with an album for the Bharat Bala–directed video Jana Gana Mana, a conglomeration of performances by many leading exponents and artists of Indian classical music.

Since 2004, Rahman has performed three successful world tours to audiences in Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Dubai, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and India. Shahrukh being a Muslim in India where religion plays a key role while deciding the destiny of marital alliances, his marrying Gauri whom he had met in 1984 and eventually married in 1991 was indeed a tough task to accomplish.

The relationship between the two had been kept under wraps, and understandably so because Gauri's parents would not have accepted it. Or, so it seemed for quite some time even while the twosome continued to meet up for six long years. The youngest in a Punjabi joint family with around 15 members, that Gauri would marry someone from her community was a foregone conclusion.

As for Shahrukh, he was willing to do anything to get her in his life, and it is said that he had entered Gauri's household by posing as Abhimanyu during the girl's birthdayparty. Abhimanyu…. Who? Yes! The character that Shahrukh had just started to play in the television serial Fauji that was being directed by the retired Lieutenant Colonel Raj Kapoor. Vikram's voice is fluid here, as he intersperses conversation and song with ease. As far as melodies go, this one's perhaps not brilliant but the lyrics provide some spice.

Piano notes start Vizhigalil oru Vaanavil, and Saindhavi starts off the number slow and smooth. She maintains a low, breathy tone that is pleasing. The notes have an eternal appeal as they mix gentle sorrow with affection. The pace is steady, and the appeal continues in the charanam as well. This is one of those numbers whose every variation you've heard and yet it manages to captivate you.

Pa Pa Pappa starts off with bird sounds and a whistle, an enthusiastic beginning. This time too, it's Vikram who does the honours, and he manages to bring a child in front of your eyes, with his quavering and slightly off-key voice. There's a proliferation of a flute's notes and a simple beat that gives importance to the vocals. The song shifts from a nursery-esque feel to a tribal setting, but returns to a child's voice soon.

The beginning of Vennilave turns out to be somewhat somber, and it's G V Prakash who holds the vocal reins. In keeping with his uncle, A R Rahman's tradition, he manages to throw his voice high and low. The background instrumental score is almost austere, and it adds some depth to the song. And you're reminded of Yaar Yaar Sivam, from Anbe Sivam.

Jagada Dhom begins in quite a different fashion from the rest: a burst of synthesized music, S P B's strong voice lifted to the high heavens, while Maya and Rajesh add accompaniment. It's set to the mandatory template of win-at-all-cost songs, and has such a strong whiff of Lagaan [ Images ]'s Chale Chalo that you start humming the original despite yourself.

A melodious piano piece begins Aariro, with a touch of angst; Haricharan sings in a soothing voice even as he touches high and low notes with ease. The pace rises and falls, taking you along with it. The song, undoubtedly, celebrates a unique relationship and while the first few lines of the charanam aren't all that inspiring, the song regains its appeal in the last couple of lines with the piano accompaniment. The flute plays a large part during the second interlude, and it traverses a familiar musical landscape. Ignoring these minor quirks, though, this is quite a moving piece.

Life Is Beautiful has all the haunting beauty of the Scottish highlands even as Kalyan and Navin Iyer whistle their way gently through the beginning. The violin segment, though it may hold no surprises for lovers of western music, is very appealing. Obviously the theme music, it tugs your heart-strings. A short but melodious track.

Deiva Thirumagan has numbers that fit in, almost formulaic fashion, with the angst and emotion that's required of a movie like this. The good thing is that G V Prakash, despite going with tried and trusted tunes, manages to make them melodious and touching. Go for it.

Bejoy Nambiar's film Shaitan, which is touted as showing the dark side of the life of Mumbai youngsters, doesn't intend to have shock value to grab attention, says actor Gulshan Devaiya.

"I don't think we have done anything, which would have a shock value. It was scripted and it was in a flow. If it turns out something is shocking, then its ok but it's not done intentionally to shock people or to grab attention," Gulshan told in an interview.

Produced by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, Shaitan traces the life of five youngsters from Mumbai's urban scape and how in covering up an accident, these intelligent, good looking and "uber-cool" youngsters had to dig out the flip side of their character that lurks within.

"I don't think it's intended to show Mumbai in a different perspective, but it wanted to show how young people who live a very fast paced life in the city. It's also shows how young people are adapting themselves with the new Mumbai," said Gulshan.

He was initially offered the role of the police officer played by actor Rajiv Khandelwal but he had failed to impress Nambiar in the audition, he revealed.

"I was first called for the role of Mathur the cop, played by Rajiv Khandelwal. He wanted to shoot a scene with me and see if I fit the role. I think Rajiv Khandelwal was busy and was unable to give him time. So he was considering me.

"I shot for whole one day. It was a very tiring shot. I had to spend the whole day with a big moustache. I don't think he was really happy with how the shot came out and said he will let me know," said Gulshan.

Gulshan himself was also more inclined towards the role he grabbed than that he was offered initially.

"Personally, I feel that Mathur's character is the best of the film but somehow I was instinctively drawn towards KC because I thought it would be a nice role, I would enjoy playing KC. So when I shot for Mathur I couldn't give my 100 per cent. I was somehow fantasizing the role of KC," said Gulshan.

The actor was enticed to do play KC because it's a very edgy role but he personally doesn't identify with the character at all.

"I am not like KC at all. I don't like too many people around, going to nightclubs, all this loud music, I don't do drugs, I don't even smoke though I occasionally enjoy my drinks. I didn't find the role difficult I found it interesting. I wanted to do it," he said.

The theatre actor had also played a small role in Rohan Sippy's recent release Dum Maro Dum and is again to be seen as a undercover gangster in The Girl in Yellow Boots.

Though he played grey characters in three consecutive films, Gulshan made a conscious effort to keep each of them radically discrete from each other.

"My character Ricky in Dum Maaro Dum is of a peddler and I played a gangster in 'The Girl in Yellow Boots' but I didn't draw any reference from any of my previous characters. I tried to keep KC as far away as possible in terms of look, speaking and walking style. I try to keep all the character as far away from me as possible. That's why I don't do TV commercials, because they want you as you are. It's very boring," said Gulshan.

Actress Kalki Koechlin, who has also worked with him in theatres and later in Kashyap's The Girl in Yellow Boots, then suggested his name to Nambiar for the role of KC.

"Kalki suggested my name for KC, because he hadn't finalised on the cast. So I took the scene, prepared for it and was auditioned. Again Bejoy Nambiar didn't call me. So I called because I was getting jittery. He confirmed me and that's how I got the role," said Gulshan, who has a long association with Kalki since his theatre days.
