Willerton was born in Westbury Park, Bristol. Her father, Bruce Willerton (born 1958), is a keen athlete and competitive triathlete who finished in 44th place in the 2009 Perth ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships.

She attended St Ursula's School in Bristol until Year 6 and then Cotham School in Bristol. She began her modelling career at fifteen, after being scouted by Kate Marshall of Room 3 model agency while out shopping with her sister. She signed with Models 1 in 2014.

In December 2013, Willerton was linked to reality star Joey Essex after they appeared on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! together. However, papers reported in January 2014 that they had split, but Essex said they had 'never had a relationship anyway' and that they 'just really got along in the jungle' although he has since claimed they have kissed and slept together.

In 2011 Amy was preparing to start university in Cardiff studying Media. However, her plans changed when she spotted whilst presenting alongside Russell Brand in his ‘Booky Wook II’ tour. Amy was encouraged to compete against tens of thousands of contestants for Sky Living’s new modeling reality TV show ‘Signed by Katie Price’. Teenage Amy went on to win the competition and was launched into the British national press – in a shocking twist however, Amy decided to turn down the winning contract with Price, as she wanted to take her career in a different direction.

2013 saw Amy win the chance to represent Great Britain in Donald Trump’s Miss Universe pageant. History was broken in Moscow, Russia as Amy became the first British girl in over 3 decades to place in the top 10. Less than 24 hours after landing into London following the Miss Universe final, Amy boarded a plane to Brisbane and spent the next 24 days living in the Australian jungle as part of ITV1′s ‘I’m a celebrity – Get me out of here!’.

Amy conquered the fierce trials with ease – her challenges included lying in a box with 5 Pythons on her first day, being suspended 200ft above the ground covered in 40,000 critters, and crawling through a pit of tarantulas. The show received it’s highest ever ratings of 13 million and won the Best Entertainment Show at the National Television Awards.
